The annual wait for a new chapter of FX’s “American Horror Story: Freakshow” ended Oct. 8 when the fourth season aired with a record breaking 10 million viewership.

Set in Jupiter, Florida in the year 1952, returnee Jessica Lange’s character, Elsa Mars, is an aspiring star who dreams to have all eyes on her once she raises her freakshow to fame. Mars and the performers have a fierce desire for an audience because of the dying interest of the American carny performances and for acceptance.

The whole town is in fear because of a serial killer named Twisty the Clown played by John Carroll Lynch. His character is anything but a friendly neighbor jokester. He is the reason why coulrophobia exists with his mask coated in sharp, bloodthirsty teeth and terrifying appearance.

He is a retired clown who is angered by the arrival of the freakshow. Since his first appearance in the opening scene he left viewers in awe and frightened. He has brutally murdered four people with rusty scissors or bowling pins and has taken two hostages into his secluded trailer in only two episodes. In episode two, the face behind the mask was shown which may have been more terrifying than his mask itself. It is revealed that Twisty is seeking an audience as much as Mars is by conducting twisted murders around Jupiter.

A very prominent plot in the show is the appearance of unusual characters. The most prominent is Sarah Paulson who plays Bette and Dot Tattler, siamese twins who share a body but have two different personalities. Evan Peters plays Jimmy Darling whose stage name is “Lobster Boy” due to ectrodactyly, a condition where he has cleft hands and wears mittens to hide them. His mother is played by Oscar award winning actress Kathy Bates who is the “Bearded Lady.” Her ex husband, Dell Toledo played by Michael Chiklis, is the “Stupendous Strongman.” His new wife is Desiree Dupree, a three breasted hermaphrodite, who is played by Angela Bassett.

There are also real people who are “extra-ordinary artists” that have joined the cast. One of which is the Guinness World Records’ smallest woman alive, Indian actress Jyoti Amge.

With two out of 13 episodes released so far, the overall response of viewers is positive. As the plot unveils and we learn more about the characters, audiences are sure to be on their toes as unfathomable occurrences develop in the small town of Jupiter. “American Horror Story: Freakshow” airs on Wednesday nights on FX at 10 p.m. and is rated TV-MA.
