On The Gridiron: Football Profiles
July 14, 2014
Eric Flowers has been playing football ever since he was in the sixth grade. Balancing out school and football is quite a struggle for him.
One of the teammates sees Flowers as a dedicated and hardworking player.
“He is a dedicated, competitive good willing person,” Stanley Cea said.
Flowers has been on the Birmingham Community Charter High School football team since his freshman year. He started on the junior varsity team but moved up to the varsity team for the start of his sophomore year.
Every player sets goals for themselves and Flowers sets his goal to be a D-1 prospect when he goes to college. The player who inspired Flowers to be a linebacker is Ray Lewis from the Baltimore Ravens.
There will always times where teamwork is always the best thing to do for a sport.
“You are only stronger as your weakest link,” Flowers said.
Stanly Cea is a very athletic and devoted student at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School.
Cea has been involved in many sports over the years, including football, and is currently in wrestling. He began wrestling about five months ago, around the time that his football season ended. He says he got into wrestling through his coach telling him about a match and he gave it a shot and liked it.
Cea hopes to continue wrestling throughout high-school and possibly be a future MVP in football. He says he enjoys wrestling because he feels dominant over his opponents and because it’s such an aggressive sport. He also says his friends and family are very supportive of him.
“My parents support me in anything I do and my friends come watch my matches,” Cea said.
Cea plans to go to UCLA and if he were to pursue a sport other than wrestling, it would be football. As a kid, he used to take part in a variety of sports which include baseball, basketball, football, and many others.
He has a background full of sports and being physically active but now he’s heading toward the medicinal field. Besides being an athlete, Cea would also like to have a career in health/fitness.
“I would like to become a doctor in physical fitness,” he said.
High schools rejoice football games more than any other sport. It is needless to say that it is a thrilling game to watch and junior Amir Muhammad feels it’s invigorating.
Seventeen-year-old Muhammad is on the junior varsity football team at Birmingham Community Charter High School. For this upcoming fall season, Muhammad will try out for the varsity team. He is proud of the big and small achievements that he makes while playing.
“I feel confident in myself when I make a good block or a pass,” Muhammad said. “It’s fun and challenging.”
Although he is playing football, Muhammad’s true goals are in a different sport. When asked about what he wants to carry on doing professionally, his answer was basketball. It’s been a passion of his much longer and he remembers playing it when he was only 10.
“Football is just something I do to tone up and build strength,” Muhammad said. “Basketball is what I see myself doing and loving in the future.”
