Although schools out for the summer, a journalism student’s job never takes a break.
Three The Pearl Post staff members attended the 48th annual California Student Media festival this morning (June 6.) The festival, co-sponsored by PBS SoCal, is dedicated to celebrating student’s media and multimedia projects all over California. This year the iconic festival was held at The Harmony Gold Preview House on Sunset Boulevard. The theater was filled with eager students awaiting to see their winning masterpieces come to life in front of parents, teachers and students from across the state.
This year, newspaper students Emon Abdullah, Jessica Mallari and Alex Pineda submitted their video package on the “Be More Heroic Comes to DPMHS” news story. The video won Best News Story at the media festival. Unfortunately Mallari and Pineda could not attend the ceremony due to them taking their SAT exams.
The festival, which received more than 600 entries from elementary, middle and high schools, is a representative on how when students work together with the help and support of their teacher, the outcome can be worthwhile. This is Daniel Pearl Magnet High School’s second year winning this award. Last year, a team of students working on the PBS Student Reporting Labs project won Best News Short for their news video on high school dropouts.
An hour-long recap of today’s awards show will be aired on PBS SoCal later this year.
