With their last season of lacrosse around the corner, seniors Brenda Garcia and Erika Lopez hope to make it to the playoffs and win first place.
“I was new to lacrosse last year so I was getting the hang of it,” Garcia said. “I plan to practice more and block more shots as goalie.” At 5’1’’, she is still a dominant force on the team.
All four lacrosse girls that go to Daniel Pearl Magnet High School (DPMHS), Brenda Garcia, Erika Lopez, Kathy Lopez and Evelyn Lopez seem very invested in their sports and it shows around campus with their spirit wear and lacrosse sticks handy.
“My favorite part of playing lacrosse is outrunning opponents,” said Erika Lopez, the team’s center.
Lopez clearly loves showing who rules the field with her fast running capabilities. Being 5’5’’, she has an advantage over other players with her speed and agility.
Garcia, Erika Lopez, Kathy Lopez and Evelyn Lopez agree that Palisades and Chaminade high schools are their team’s toughest opponents. Erika Lopez has been playing for three years and the other three are starting their second year on the team. The four of them hope their team does better than last year’s second place finish in the city finals.
Garcia and Erika Lopez will be playing the last season of lacrosse as high school students, but both are considering playing lacrosse in college.
Since lacrosse is a fairly new and upcoming sport, Garcia enjoys explaining the sport to people to help them get a better understanding of the game.
“Lacrosse is basically a mix of soccer, basketball and tennis and…other sports,” Garcia said.
Erika Lopez feels very fortunate to be playing lacrosse and loves the game.
“Lacrosse is fun for me, and I have fun while I am playing,” Lopez said.
