Safety tips for new drivers
April 9, 2014
If you’re between the ages of 15 and 18, then you’re probably either starting to drive or are already licensed. But with driving comes new responsibilities, and even new dangers that one must face.
According to the National Safety Council, the most dangerous time of a teen driver’s life is the first 12 months of getting a license, and a teen driver’s crash risk is three times that of more experienced drivers.
Here are some tips to always stay safe, whether you are just learning to drive or are already licensed:
1. Always wear your seatbelt. Make sure that all passengers are wearing theirs, too. Wearing your seatbelt can reduce your risk of injury in case you are involved in an accident. Research has shown that lap/shoulder seat belts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50 percent.
2. Never text or talk on the phone while driving. Texting involves two hands, but so does driving. Always keep both hands on the wheel and stay concentrated. 13 percent of drivers ages 18 to 20 involved in car wrecks admitted to texting or talking on their devices at the time of the crash. Don’t be one of those people. If you need to text or make a call, pull off the road to a safe spot and park your car.
3. Be aware of the weather, traffic congestion, and road conditions. Stay alert and focused. Bad weather such as rain can really be an unsafe driving environment, especially for less experienced drivers. When the rain starts pouring down, make sure to drive slower than normal. The road is the most slippery after a dry spell. As for traffic and road conditions, there are apps for your phone that show real-time traffic and road conditions.
4. Maintain your car. Bad brakes or a hesitant engine could lead to an accident. Always make sure everything is running smoothly to avoid any disasters. Doing things such as checking the fuel level, maintaining proper tire pressure and even keeping your windows clean can help tremendously.
5. Be a courteous and safe driver at all times. Don’t act like you own the road. Always obey speed limits, stop signs and traffic lights. Don’t forget to share the road with others, such as people on motorcycles and bikes, and even pedestrians crossing the street.
Always practice safe driving habits and keep these tips with you in mind. Good luck, new driver.
