Every month, we recognize two student athletes, one male, one female. This month we recognize Senior Diego Vera Suarez.
Vera Suarez swims for the varsity swim team at Birmingham Community Charter High School. This is his first year competing in swimming due to focusing on his academics in his junior year.
Q: Why did you decide to join the swim team?
A: I really like swimming. Also, I really wished to try out last year, but I never tried before because I was passing my classes to graduate.
Q: What is your favorite part about being on the swim team?
A: My favorite part is the practice. All the time when we do warm-up, uh is good, because I really like to do any exercise. Even the 400, 300 Freestyle or backstroke, it’s a little fun
Q: What is your favorite length to compete in?
A: My favorite is freestyle, because when you’re doing freestyle, you only swim, you don’t do anything. Also the 400, but I prefer to do it in a team, like you can work together.
Q: Did you pick the length that you compete in?
A: I picked it by myself because I was thinking it was a great idea to start a new sport. I was doing cross country and one time I did track and field, but I never thought about the idea of trying another sport.
Q: How would you describe the culture of your team?
A: We are funny. Also when we are racing, we celebrate by telling the person who’s competing to keep going, even if he’s like last or first or in the middle.
Q: What are your goals being on the swim team?
A: My goal is to like, be faster, get more flexibility and also to gain more muscle because some parts of my body, I don’t use it sometimes. When I was running for a year I used legs.
Q: What is it like incorporating multiple sports into your swim season?
A: It’s not like it’s hard. I have the ability, so when I’m swimming I can resist like a lapse.
