From humble beginnings as former high school friends with an idea to start a band to now becoming one of the most prominent indie-pop bands, Men I Trust has risen to fame and now contributes to the soaring popularity of indie music.
First formed by high school friends who reunited during college in Quebec City in 2014, Men I Trust is an indie pop and rock band and includes lead guitarist and singer Emanuelle Proulx, bassist and rhythm guitarist Jessy Caron and keyboardist Dragos Chriaic. After releasing their first self-titled album in 2014, they did not find immediate success.
“We’re very surprised,” (at their popularity) Proulx said in an interview with Exclaim Media. “We reached out so much at the beginning, but people weren’t commercially interested in it.”
Releasing their second album “Headroom” in 2015, they got their first taste of success when the band caught the attention of popular rapper Tyler the Creator (Tyler Gregory Okonma) in 2018 and were invited to perform at his music festival Camp Flog Gnaw. Men I Trust particularly grew from their hit single “Show Me How” racking up over 600 million streams on Spotify.
Since then, Men I Trust has released newer albums such as The Untourable Album in 2021, which was written and inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic and most recently, Equus Asinus this month. A follow-up album, “Equus Caballus” is expected to be released within the next few months. These new albums slightly stray from their typical dream-like style and are more influenced by folk music.
“Early in the writing and recording process, we realized we had a collection of songs with distinct energies yet equally meaningful to us,” the band stated on the social media platform X. “It became clear that we wanted to release them as two separate entities both from the same genus.”
As a result of their new releases, Men I Trust is slated to launch the Equus Tour. The tour will run from July to September and feature destinations across North America and Europe.
Men I Trust have shown their dedication to their music and have empowered many people by becoming one of the most popular indie bands in the music industry. As the band continues to release new music, their fans are elated to see what comes next and how they will progress.
