Every month, we recognize two student-athletes for athletic excellence. This month, we showcase sophomore Andrea Arosemena.
Arosemena plays center on the Birmingham Community Charter High School team. She finds that basketball is a tranquil space where she can express herself on the court.
Q: How do you enjoy Basketball?
A: I like it. It’s a safe space, it’s something I can turn to.
Q:What basketball positions do you enjoy?
A:Point guard is my second one that I enjoy playing
Q: Have you played any other positions in basketball?
A: I’ve played all the positions. Right now on the team, I’m the center.
Q: What made you join Basketball?
A: I started playing when I was nine years old. Since then I really enjoyed it, so I just kept going.
Q: What teams have you played in before?
A: I started playing for travel teams, Monstars and Havoc.
Q: How do you train for your sport?
A: We have practices as a team. Then I practiced on my own, on the side. I do ball handling and shooting and like going to the weight room to get stronger.
Q: How do you like practice?
A: It’s pretty fun. Sometimes we run a lot because we need to be in shape for the fast breaks and everything. Besides that when we play games it’s fun.
Q: What motivates you to continue playing?
A: I want a scholarship to go to college. Being able to have a scholarship to pay for my education and being able to travel. Because the sport allows me to travel, that’s what motivates me.
Q: What challenges are there with your sport?
A: Sometimes not having confidence and team chemistry can be kind of difficult.
Q: How have you done in your recent competitions?
A: I did good. We’re undefeated right now. We’re a good team.
Q: How do you enjoy competitions?
A: I like competing against people. I like showing off my skills and everything.

A: Yes. I do.
Q: What are some goals you have for yourself this season?
A: I plan to become a better 3-point shooter and a better leader this season.
