Every month, we recognize two student-athletes for athletic excellence. This month, we showcase junior Marianna Alvarez.
While soccer is just a hobby for Marianna Alvarez, she is excited for what the future of the sport could bring. Alvarez plays on the Birmingham Community Charter high School junior varsity soccer team.
Q: What were the highlights of this season?
A: It started well, we won the first three games at home and I think that’s why we did a good job. But when we were playing versus other teams on their soccer field, we played off. I’ve been improving, I had the opportunity to score two goals during pre-season and other times mid-season.
Q: How was this season different from the last?
A: This year I think we have been doing better, having a better relationship with each other. We now have another coach for JV and I think it’s a good thing.
Q: During the off-season, how do you train?
A:I like to go to the gym or practice by myself running between 20 to 30 minutes. We also have soccer practice in the mornings, and during the season we have late practices up until 4:30 p.m.
Q: Do you have reflections on this season?
A: Maybe to not give up and to always compete even though the other teams can be better. To always compete and never give up on my efforts.
Q: What is something you want to improve on?
A: To have better conditioning and I think that’s something I really need to improve.
Q: What goals in soccer do you have in the future?
A: Right now I am looking at soccer as a hobby, so just to enjoy it and have fun with soccer, but to also play as well as I can.
Q: What do you have planned next?
A: I’m planning to finish this season and I don’t know if I’m going to keep playing soccer next season because of some injuries. I am going to enjoy what I have now with soccer and everything, but it’s because of some injuries and also trying to focus more on high school.
Q: What do you plan to divert your focus to?
A: I plan to take advantage of college classes or take more time for (school) activities.
