The theme for this year’s Valentine’s Day concert is love, hate, love, featuring songs that highlight the duality of love and hate.
“As you’ll notice, a lot of the songs that have to do with love often times comes with hate,” said music teacher and organizer of the concert Wes Hambright.
The concert will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) tomorrow from approximately 7-9 p.m. The MPR is decorated for the occasion with string lights and paper hearts scattered across the walls. It will feature love songs like “Something” by The Beatles and “Fly me to the moon” by Frank Sinatra as well as poetry excerpts written by members of the school Poetry Club. The poems also match the concert’s theme, expressing conflicting emotions of love and the difficulties that come with it.
“My poem is about love and what it’s like to hold on to someone and then finally let go,” said sophomore Jasmine Thompson, who is on the staff of The Pearl Post. “It’s truly one of my favorites and it fits the theme of the concert.”
Today, performers ran through the setlist for the concert. Students had the opportunity to watch the dress rehearsal in their third and fourth periods. The practice helped the musicians refine their performances.
“We’re working out the kinks today,” Hambright said. “Every time we knock something off the list that we were working on, it feels good because we know we’re getting closer to performance level.”
As the concert date approaches, the mood is optimistic.
“I am so beyond excited for the concert because I have had the opportunity to work with amazing musicians and grow with my instrument,” said sophomore Nadia Buer, who plays guitar.
