Musicians celebrated the 67th annual Grammys Awards on Feb. 2. Here are some of my favorite highlights from that night.
Doechii:
African-American artist Doechii performed original songs “Catfish” and “Denial is a River” after winning her first Grammy in “Best Rap Album” for her mixtape named “Alligator Bites Never Heal.” Seeing an underground artist rise to the top and become one of three black women to win the title of “Best Rap Album” at the Grammy’s was exciting. After she won, she released a single called “Nosebleeds.” The song addresses those who thought she wouldn’t win. Doechii’s performance followed Bensoon Boone’s performance which followed Benson Boone, which brought so much energy to the crowd and you could see the guest’s shock during her finale.
Charli XCX:
Pop Artist Charli XCX closed out the Grammy’s by performing “Von Dutch” from her album “Brat” and hit single “Guess” featuring Billie Eilish. In her performance, she brought out a cohort of dancers bringing back the “Brat” summer energy. I loved the energy she brought to the stage and how it matched her persona. Charli XCX was nominated for 10 Grammys and she won three: “Best Recording Package,” “Best Dance/ Electronic Album” and Dance Pop Recording.”
Quincy Jones Tribute:
During the Grammys, artists Will Smith, Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monáe, Lainey Wilson, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock paid tribute to the late Quincy Jones. Jones was a famous producer known for songs like “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Billie Jean” and “Beat It.” In this tribute, singer and actress Erivo sang “Fly Me to the Moon” with pianist Hancock. Next, Wilson performed a rendition of “Let the Good Times Roll,” Wonder and Hancock performed a duet for their beloved friend Quincy Jones. The tribute ended with Monae, singing Michael Jackson’s song “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough,” which Jones produced. This tribute was beautiful and highlighted key moments in Quincy Jones’s career.
Chapell Roan:
Singer-songwriter Chapell Roan won the title of “Best New Artist” after her debut in 2024. In her speech, she spoke against record labels not supporting artists, as her health had been neglected by a previous label. Her speech created a lot of emotional responses from the audience. Before this emotional moment, Roan performed her song “Pink Pony Club.” As she rode out on a pink pony, in a flashy metallic outfit with an ensemble surrounding her wearing Western outfits, guests sang and danced to her sensational performance.
Sabrina Carpenter:
A jazzy performance by artist Sabrina Carpenter brought a fun element to the Grammys. Carpenter had three outfit changes during her performance, keeping the audience fully engaged. My favorite of the three was her bedazzled corset, which she wore when she opened up her performance. She sang “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” from her pop album “Short n’ Sweet.” Sabrina Carpenter was nominated for six Grammys and won two in the categories “Best Pop Vocal Album” and “Best Pop Solo Performance.”
Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga
Artists Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga performed a duet of “California Dreamin” by The Mamas and Papas in tribute to those affected by the Los Angeles (L.A.) Fires in January. This tribute captivated the hearts of many affected by the fires. The soft symphonies of the song helped us reminisce about the (L.A.) we once knew and loved. The duo also won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group for their song “Die With A Smile.” During the Grammys, Lady Gaga dropped a music video for her new song “Abracadabra,” which many have begun to love.
