Each month, we recognize student athletes for their outstanding performance on the field. This month, we recognize sophomore Ava Weinstein. Weinstein has been a part of Birmingham Community Charter High School’s JV basketball team for two years and is thrilled to be a team player.
Q: What position do you play?
A: I’m the five and the four, and sometimes the three. So it’s like a shooting guard, a small power forward and a center.
Q: How long have you been playing?
A: I’ve been playing since I was around five years old.
Q: What made you decide to pursue basketball in high school?
A: What made me pursue basketball was my dad. We’ve always played since I was little.
Q: How do you balance your academic responsibilities and your sport?
A: On the weekends, I do all my homework and then on the weekdays, I try to relax. So I wait to do my homework. Sometimes if I have an early practice, I’ll do my homework after practice.
Q: Do you plan on pursuing basketball after high school?
A: Yeah, I do. I still need to plan things.
Q: What keeps you going during tough games and moments?
A: Having positive energy is always going to make you feel better at the end of the day and also just trying not to run during practice and realizing that this is a team and we’re not always going to win everything, but you’ve got to get through it like a family.
Q: What is your favorite part of being on the team?
A: Just hanging out and having fun with my friends.
Q: What are some goals you have for yourself this season?
A: The goals I have are to be a better player and teammate. I want to be more positive on the court, not be super negative.
Q: What is the best advice you have received about your sport?
A: At the end of the day, it’s just basketball. It’s more about the connections you make on the team, rather than having to win.
