After three years of work at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School (DPMHS) Resource Special Education teacher (RSP) Evie Stone decided that Dec. 13 will be her last day here.
Stone plans to work next at Hale Charter Academy Middle School, where she will work as an RSP teacher. Stone’s decision to leave DPMHS is the same reason that brought her to the school previously, which was her need for a change in the environment.
“I like experiencing new schools,” Stone said. “I love experiencing different cultures…Before here I was at elementary school. I never worked with high school before. I was looking to try something new.”
As an RSP teacher, Stone directed Special Education at DPMHS. Specifically, she oversaw the Individualized Education Plans (IEP) of students with disabilities. During her time here, Stone observed classrooms to monitor the learning environment of students under her care. When her students had trouble learning, she then worked to provide the proper accommodations for their education.
“I love when a student is struggling and I’m able to help them,” Stone said. “And they go ‘Oh, now I get it.’ So that’s the best feeling in the world.”
After Stone leaves, her fellow RSP teacher Sadia Aziz will be the only remaining teacher specializing in Special Education. Although Aziz and Stone had a separate group of students, they often collaborated together on helping students when necessary. From Aziz’s time spent working with Stone, she will miss the dedication Stone brought to her work.
“She would put in extra time,” Aziz said. “She would put in extra resources… She would go and find the resources to help the students.”
