Each month, two student athletes are recognized for their achievements and their outstanding performance, one from a boys team and one from a girls team. This month, we recognize senior Zion Waddell.
Waddell has been part of Birmingham Community Charter High School’s baseball team for four years. He is excited to better his skills and hopes to have great performances in his final year of high school.
Q: Why did you decide to pursue baseball?
A: My dad just put me into baseball when I was younger and I liked it, so I stuck with it. It’s just fun, and I get good exercise in.
Q: Do you plan on continuing baseball after high school?
A: Yeah, plan on playing in college. I’ll probably play wherever I get the best play time.
Q: Do you find it difficult to balance being a student athlete with your academics?
Yeah, for sure it’s difficult. You got to stay up late sometimes getting your schoolwork done, then wake up early and get back to training the next day.
Q: How do you stay motivated in challenging games and times?
A: Well I love playing baseball, so that love for the game just makes it easy to keep doing what I do. I just remember that the struggle is part of it. You gotta work through the good times and the bad times. You know, it’s all part of the process.
Q: Are you excited for the upcoming spring season?
A: Yeah, I’m really excited, hopefully maybe back to championship this year, because we ended up losing in the championship last year. We lost 2-4 to Bell (High School) I’m hoping we do a good job this year.
Q: What do you love the most about baseball?
A; It’s really peaceful. It’s not a really fast, aggressive game. It clears my mind when I’m stressed out. I find baseball always helps.
