There were sights and sounds of a typical Oscar award ceremony. But this was the 47th Annual California Student Media Festival being held at the iconic TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
Four students from Daniel Pearl Magnet High School (DPMHS): Danny Uhlenberg, Jade Bell, Carlos Godoy and Ayla Allen attended the June 15 event, winning Best News Short along with their PBS Newshour Student Reporting Lab team members for their news video on high school dropouts.
Throughout the awards ceremony, students sat and watched various clips from other students’ videos. After clips were shown, students walked to the front and had the option to give their thank yous, receive their award and a “Swag Bag” containing educational goodies.
DPMHS students thanked their PBS SoCal mentor Alyssa Torrez, for helping them do well. They also got a chance to take photos on the “red carpet” while holding the plaque.
