Tyler Gregory Okonma, also known as Tyler, the Creator, released his seventh solo album “Chromokopia,” which is heavily inspired by his childhood and his mother.
At his recent listening party on Oct. 27 at the Intuit Dome, Tyler, the Creator announced that his inspiration for the album came from growing up in Los Angeles. After this, he mentioned that he incorporated different sayings his mom told him when he was younger into the album, which was released on Oct. 28.
Snippets of a woman giving advice is a really beautiful element to the album as it gives light context to what each song is going to be about. One of the more prominent recordings of the mother-figure is heard in “St. Chroma,” featuring Daniel Caesar, where the woman who is playing Tyler’s mother says, “You are the light, it’s not on you, It’s in you. Don’t you ever in your … life dim your light for nobody.” Although this is just an example, this aspect to the album also gives a feeling of nostalgia to each track.
One of my favorite songs on this new album is “Noid” because it features a sample from the Zambian musician Paul Ngozi and speaks out against crazy fans invading personal space. These two elements create a picture of paranoia and explain how Tyler, the Creator, constantly looks over his shoulder even while in a comfortable environment.
“Sticky” is one of the most popular songs on this new album. It features GloRilla, Lil Wayne, and Sexyy Red. This unexpected combo has made the song immensely popular and talked about by millions. It has a very fun beat and I definitely recommend it to those looking for an edgy new sound.
“Take Your Mask Off,” featuring Daniel Caesar and Latoiya Williams. are split into four different dynamics. The first one speaks about those seeking out validation, with the second about fathers who are absent-minded. My two favorite parts of this song were the third and fourth section of it. The third section of this song is mainly about mothers who wear a mask for their children, constantly providing for their loved ones and putting away their dreams in return. Some of the lyrics include: “Three cute kids that’s in your arms.” “Tired of bein’ at home’, personality gone Body ain’t been the same, postpartum is long your identity gone.” In the last minutes of the song, I believe it tells the story of how the child is now trying to fend for themself in the real world and gives a message to always keep it real with yourself. Overall, this song was made diligently and has a great meaning that many people should try to understand.
Tyler, the Creator is having a world tour starting in February 2025. I highly recommend seeing him perform in person considering he is very dedicated to his craft. Listen to the album “Chromakopia” on all platforms.
