Sophomore Andrea Arosemena played on the basketball team last year but decided to add girls flag football the list of sports she excels in. Her move was the right one as Birmingham Community Charter High School (BCCHS) wraps up a second successful season.
“I honestly didn’t know what to expect at first, but it’s exciting,” said Arosemena, who plays outside backer and a wide receiver on the varsity flag football team. “It gives me an opportunity to see a sport I wouldn’t have thought of before and I really am enjoying it.”
As the second season of the girls flag football comes to an end on Oct. 31 with their last game on the same day. With playoffs starting shortly after, the BCCHS Patriots remain undefeated entering their last week of the regular season. With only one tie on their record, they are currently 12-0-1 with hopes to keep up the pace.
Being on the varsity girls team, Arosemena works hard to stay prepared for upcoming games. Wanting to win is what keeps her motivated to do her best.
“Knowing that we are undefeated right now and knowing that there is a possibility we can lose it really helps me lock in, we want to stay undefeated throughout the season,” Arosemena said.
Arosemena attributes the success of their team to teamwork and the positive attitude of the team as a whole. Being a vital part of sports, teamwork can be the deciding factor between a winning and losing team.
“Our team is all close with each other, and we are all positive,” Arosemena said. “We work together to become the best team we can be.”
After their 0-0 draw against Verdugo Hills High School on Sept. 11, the team felt discouraged early on in the season. After this game, things were different for Arosemena and her teammates.
“After having bad games, we lift each other up,” Arosemena said. “We eventually get better toward the end of a game and we win.”
This season is something Arosemena will never forget with not only being undefeated but also building bonds that will last a lifetime. Being on the team was a new experience that showed winning is fun but winning with friends is better.
“Being able to hang around the people, because they are different people, different personalities, I can just talk to them more about things that I don’t talk to other people about,” Arosemena said. “Being in this type of environment is new to me and I really enjoy that.”
