Every month, we recognize two student athletes for their achievements and their outstanding performance, one from a boys team and another from a girls team. For this month, we recognize freshman Cecia Herrera.
Even though Herrera is new to the Birmingham Community Charter High School freshman and sophomore girls volleyball team, she is not new to volleyball and is excited for the upcoming season and the opportunity to compete.
Q: What position are you?
A: Middle.
Q: Why did you decide to pursue volleyball as a sport?
A: Because I’ve been playing volleyball since I was eight years old. I joined clubs, and I got more interested and it’s just a fun sport for me.
Q: Do you find it difficult to balance your schoolwork with volleyball?
A: I don’t, because I play volleyball for two hours, and then I go and do my homework right away. So I have a routine, I guess you could say.
Q: Do you plan on playing volleyball after high school?
A: Maybe, but I also like flag football, so either I’ll play volleyball or something else. I enjoy both.
Q: How do you stay motivated during tough games & challenging times?
A: I calm myself down and try not to think about a lot during the game. Overthinking isn’t good.
Q: What do you love the most about volleyball?
A: My teammates, how they’re so supportive of all of us. I like my teammates, and I also like winning the games. I like that it’s just a fun sport for me to play and to keep myself distracted from other things.
Q: What are your goals for this volleyball season?
A: To get better, and to learn my position well.
