Every month, we recognize student athletes for their performance on the field. This month, we recognize sophomore Tobias Bechdholt.
Bechdholt is involved in both the varsity track and field team and the JV football team at Birmingham Community Charter High School. He particularly enjoys the pole vault event of track and field and continuously aims for new personal records. He’s successful now and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
Q: How long have you been running on the track and field team?
A: Since freshman year.
Q: What is your favorite event to take part in?
A: Pole vault.
Q: What is the most challenging aspect of track and field?
A: I don’t know, probably just PR-ing (personal record), I guess. Especially with pole vault, which is a pretty difficult sport. It’s hard to PR.
Q: How do you balance your academic and athletic lives?
A: You just have to be good at planning it out. You don’t get much free time and you have to be okay with that. You just have to go home, do homework and go to practice.
Q: What is the best advice you have received about your sport?
A: Well, my friend told me that I was counting my steps wrong, so I guess that’s advice.
Q: Do you plan to be in track and field for the rest of high school?
A: Yeah, I want to stay until I’m a senior.
