Every month, we recognize two student athletes for their performance on the field. This month, we recognize junior Deven Szymczak.
Szymczak is currently on the varsity track and field and cross-country teams for Birmingham Community Charter High School. He first started running because his family deeply inspired him to pursue what became his passion. It is now Szymczak’s third year on the track and field team and he hopes to remain on the team for his last year of high school.
Q: How long have you been running track and field?
A: I have been running since 9th grade. So, about three years.
Q: What is your favorite memory from being on the team?
A: Being able to make new friends as I met my two best friends. I have hung out with them ever since.
Q: How do you stay motivated when you don’t want to run?
A: I think about all the people counting on me and I try to imagine they’re there.
Q: What was your longest run? How did you do it?
A: My longest run was at Pierce College, which they called Puke Hill, but I pushed through it.
Q: What do you hope to achieve through running?
A: To get the fastest times and hopefully be in the finals.
Q: Do you plan to remain on the track and field team for the rest of high school?
A: I hope and will try to.
Q: Do you prefer cross country or track more?
A: I prefer track because there aren’t as many obstacles like hills.
