Every month, we recognize two student athletes, one from a boys team and another from a girls team, for their performance on the field. This month, we recognize freshman Kateryna Loboda.
As the track and field season continues, Loboda is eager to compete in her first year on the Birmingham Community Charter High School (BCCHS) freshman/sophomore girls’ track and field team.
Q: What made you want to join track and field?
A: My mom used to do track and field in her high school years and I didn’t get into the basketball team but I just wanted to try something new.
Q: What were your first impressions of track and field when you joined?
A: I thought that it would be really easy but it’s actually hard to get in shape and everything.
Q: What is your favorite aspect of being on the track and field team?
A: My favorite thing is how diverse our team is. You can meet a lot of different people who can give you good advice. Our coach is really nice too.
Q: What aspect of track and field are you best at?
A: I think I am best at 100-meter sprints.
Q: What challenges have you had to overcome?
A: The breathing aspect is hard because I have lung problems. I had pneumonia when I was three and am missing half of my lungs, so it’s hard for me to breathe sometimes.
Q: How long do you plan to be on the track and field team?
A: I plan to do track and field all four years of high school.
