The decision to remain silent has not posed well for Local District I Superintendent Linda del Cueto.
Del Cueto has been put on paid leave due to her failure to report alleged lewd acts against minors at George De La Torre Elementary School in Wilmington a few years ago.
Robert Pimentel, the teacher who was accused of these acts, was arrested in January on accounts of the rape of 12 different girls.
In an April 25 article from the Daily News, it is stated that Pimentel remains in jail with a bail of $12 million and has pleaded not guilty.
Since 2008, parents had reportedly been complaining about Pimentel to the school’s principal, Irene Hinojosa, and several administrators, including Del Cueto.
However, the school and district officials failed to report the abuse to authorities.
According to the Daily News article, Del Cueto has been “temporarily reassigned.”
In 2008, Del Cueto oversaw the same school before moving to Educational Service Center North, where her office is now located next-door to DPMHS.
“She’s still with the district but is part of an investigation,” said Daryl Strickland, a Public Information Officer for LAUSD. “In this situation, sometimes, the person will be temporarily moved out of their position.”
Although the allegations surfaced in 2012, Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy looked into files that showed Pimentel was accused of similar acts in 2002 at Dominguez Elementary in Carson.
Hinojosa was the principal at both Dominguez and George De La Torre and was aware of Pimentel’s history.
Nonetheless, before Deasy could fire Hinosa, she retired.
At the moment, Del Cueto is still under investigation and district officials can make no comment.
