Selected advanced journalism and filmmaking students will be producing news videos for the PBS News Hour’s Student Reporting Labs this school year. The students will create four videos on topics dealing with dropouts and education issues, as well as constitutional and civic issues.
Daniel Pearl Magnet High School (DPMHS) is among more than 20 middle and high schools across the country participating in the Student Reporting Labs, whose goal is to have students use digital media.
As part of this broadcasting program, a mentor from a local PBS station will be working with the students to create their news videos. The videos will be posted online in the Student Reporting Lab’s website for a national audience.
As part of this project, DPMHS will receive up to $700 to purchase equipment for this project. Some of the equipment being purchased include a video camera, tripods and microphones.
The Pearl Post staff will be reporting and interviewing and selected students in the filmmaking class will help with the production quality of the news videos.
“The newspaper staff has been creating news videos for the past couple of years but this program will provide much needed guidance in creating more informative and polished news videos,” said Pearl Post adviser Adriana Chavira.
