The Pearl Post editors and photographers won a few awards and scholarships at a state writing competition last weekend. Some 110 students from about 17 different high schools competed in the day-long Southern California Journalism Education Association write-offs at Cal State Long Beach on April 13.
Photographer Ana Perez received 2nd place in News Photography for her photo of Tangent Transmission singer/guitarist Dugan Cruz performing at the Jan. 18 Be More Heroic assembly.
Photographer Jake Dobbs won 5th place in Feature Photography for his photo of tennis player Irene Feher.
Tech Editor Chris Bower received 3rd place in Editorial Writing and Entertainment Editor Natalie Moore received 7th place in News Writing.
In addition to the journalism contests, students also received scholarships. Editor-in-Chief Elitza Batchiyska received the Carol Hallenback Scholarship, which awards $500 to graduating seniors.
Moore and Perez each received $500 scholarships to attend summer journalism workshops.
