Suspect involved in Daniel Pearl’s kidnapping arrested
March 20, 2013
It’s been 11 years following Daniel Pearl’s death and there are still breakthroughs in the investigation of his murder. Most recently, a suspect involved in his kidnapping has been identified.
Qari Abdul Hayee, leader of the Islamist militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, was arrested in Karachi, Pakistan, on March 17 for suspected involvement in Pearl’s kidnapping.
Pearl, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was abducted in January 2002 and beheaded after being held hostage for over a month. Videos and pictures of the murder were later posted on the Internet.
According to ABC News, Pakistani officials say they do not believe Hayee was directly affiliated with Pearl’s murder but do identify him as one of 27 individuals involved in his abduction.
“We are gratified by this latest arrest and hope that justice will be served on all of those who were involved in this crime against humanity,” said Pearl’s parents Ruth and Judea Pearl in a statement released through the Daniel Pearl Foundation.
