Keeping busy without tech
November 17, 2018
During my 24-hour period of being unplugged, I learned some information about myself that I never knew before. I learned that a day unplugged is a lot like a normal weekend for me. I spent the time resting, doing chores, and reading.
I knew I didn’t heavily rely on the technological gadgets that surround us in everyday life, and this exercise proved me right. I have to admit, toward the end of the period, I was counting down the minutes until I could use my phone again.
My mother, Andrea Mills-Oliveau, was supportive of this exercise, and my siblings didn’t care. They left me to entertain myself while they watched TV. I learned that I am able to ignore the mesmerizing light of the television, thanks to them.
Unplugging has given me more time to read books I’ve been wanting to read. I was able to improve my drawing skills as well. It also has allowed me to catch up on sleep that early hours of battling traffic to get to school has stolen from me.
I feel well rested after this day unplugged. I spent much of the day sleeping, but this is different. It feels as if I’m at peace. It’s a nice feeling.
I’d recommend this exercise to people who rely on their phones, computers, tablets, and the Internet. Sadly, this applies to most people nowadays. We have allowed technology to take over our lives.
On the other hand, it certainly makes life easier. We are able to find pieces of information quicker, entertain ourselves faster, and communicate with others in ways we’ve never had. Even though I succeeded in going through a day without electronic gadgets, I still missed my entertainment. This shows that however strong you are, technology has wormed a way into your heart. I’m glad I did this assignment because it taught me things I never knew about myself.
