Only seven months have passed since The Pearl Post launched its own website and already the site has gained national recognition.
The site, which was created by junior Timothy Smirnov, was announced as a Pacemaker finalist by the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) in March.
“I find the fact that we were able to get nominated rewarding because it’s the website’s first year so we must be doing something right,” Smirnov said.
Over 250 schools were considered for Pacemakers and The Pearl Post’s website is one of 20 finalists in the category for schools of enrollments under 1,500.
Pacemaker winners will be announced in April during the national journalism convention in San Francisco sponsored by the NSPA and the Journalism Education Association.
“A really big part of it comes from Ms. Chavira. She’s really ahead of the game when it comes to media,” Smirnov said.
