‘AHS: Cult’ terrorizes viewers
September 11, 2017
“American Horror Story: Cult” has audiences reliving last year’s presidential election.
The season kicks off on election night as Ally Mayfair-Richards (Sarah Paulson) and her wife Ivy (Alison Pill) watch the election results with their neighbors, husband and wife Tom and Marilyn Chang. Upon hearing Donald Trump’s victory, Richards cries in terror while Tom bashes Marilyn for not voting at all.
Viewers then meet the psychotic Kai Anderson (Evan Peters), a Trump supporter who starts humping his television and smears his face with cheese puff dust after hearing Trump’s emerged victory.
After election night, Anderson meets with the city council and proposes that security in the city should be wiped in order for citizens to rid their fear of being terrorized. Ultimately, the council declines Anderson’s proposal.
Ever since election night, Richards’ past phobias – coulrophobia, trypophobia and hemophobia – return to terrorize her. Her coulrophobia triggers when she finds her 10-year-old son Ozz reading a frightening comic book about season four’s Twisty the Clown. In the supermarket, Richards encounters creepy clowns who begin staring at her. As she rushes into her car, she notices someone in the back seat with a terrifying mask, panicking her to step on the gas pedal and crash into a lamp post.
After a few days, Ally and Ivy hire the strange Winter Anderson (Billie Lourd) as their son’s babysitter. What they don’t know, however, is that Winter is related to Kai and is following tasks, ordered by him.
One night while babysitting, Winter notices Ozz drawing a bloody picture of Twisty the
Clown and proceeds to show Ozz graphic videos of people being killed so he will no longer be afraid of anything. Later that night, Ozz spots people with masks emerging from an ice cream truck who kill the neighbors, The Changs.
With a great hook to the season, “Cult” does not fail to leave the audience in shock for what will occur in the next episode and what other terrifying things Ally will encounter throughout the season.
