Nick Heredia’s enrollment on the Birmingham Community Charter High School’s (BCCHS) boys’ lacrosse team was completely spontaneous, but beneficial.
This year, Heredia represents all of Daniel Pearl Magnet High School (DPMHS) on the team as the only player from the school.
“Even though I was the only person from DPMHS, (the Birmingham players) welcomed me with open arms,” Heredia said.
While he had known friends on the girls’ lacrosse team, they weren’t the ones who got him into it. It was a friend who shared Heredia’s love of hockey.
“A friend told me it was like hockey, and since I like hockey I decided to try it out,” Heredia said.
The team has been practicing since August, even doing a scrimmage tournament or two. Heredia’s first game was actually one of those scrimmages.
“The very first came I was pretty bad, but the second game I thought I did okay,” Heredia said. “After a week or so I got used to using the stick and throwing with it.”
Since lacrosse is a spring sport, its season hasn’t started yet. The first game is in March of 2013.
“I think we’ve got a good team here,” Heredia said. “I think we can go far.”
