Today, technology seems to be moving faster than ever before and one company is a prime example of this.
That company is Apple. Since its inception in 1976 by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, the company has churned out a new computer every year with only two exceptions. In 1978, the company only released one product, the Disk II Drive. In 1982, the company only released two products, both printers.
Then of course, there’s the iPhone.
“Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything…” Jobs said at the unveiling of the iPhone in 2007.
And ever since that first grand reveal, Apple has showed us a new iPhone every year. In September, that tradition will continue.
That’s right, the iPhone 5 has come. Or to be more precise, is coming very soon. The iPhone 5 is slated to be revealed on Sept. 12, less than a year after the release of the iPhone 4S.
“If this trend (of a new iPhone every year) continues, we’ll all have iPhone 8’s by the time we graduate (2015),” said sophomore Jordin Hammud, owner of an iPhone 3G.
But, as with any new product, there are questions. These questions are things like “Is the new iPhone worth buying?” and “Is there anything different in this version?” While no one can say whether the iPhone 5 is worth buying yet, there are definitely some new features in this version.
According to a technology blog, the iPhone 5 will have a larger screen than its predecessor. The current iPhone screen had a diagonal of 3.5 inches, but the new screen will have a diagonal of four inches. That doesn’t seem like much, but the screen in some leaked photos shows that it’s a visible difference. This new screen gives the iPhone 5 a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels, which is almost as much as a 720p high definition TV (1280 x 720 pixels).
The iPhone 5 will also have a new location for the Facetime camera. Instead of being next to the top speaker, as on the iPhone 4S, it will be on top of the speaker. This may be because of the larger screen.
Based on other leaked photos, it appears that the iPhone 5 will have a new, slimmer charging dock. This will make it incompatible with previous docks.
The Sept. 12 media event will be the second event not done by late Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Current CEO Tim Cook will be spearheading the reveal, as he did with the iPhone 4S. No price has been revealed as of yet.
“I’m super excited (for the iPhone 5),” said sophomore Brandon Gilden. “My (phone) contract ends on Oct. 1, so I might upgrade.”
Gilden and the rest of the Apple fans will just have to wait until Sept. 12 to see if the iPhone 5 can live up to the hype.
