The app was created by Simon Beckerman an entrepreneur from Milan who wanted to create a marketplace dedicated to connecting with others. According to Beckerman this came from an urge to make something innovative, design led, intuitive and fun to use. The app was first developed in Italy 2011 and later launched online in 2012.

Users on the app can simply sign up for an account, take a quick picture of the items they want to sell and post. This makes both buying and selling so simple yet entertaining. Users can also connect with others to bond over common interests and styles. The app itself is free to download on Google Play Store and the App store.

To date, the app has been downloaded over 3 million times with millions of items sold and bought since its launch. Depop has made online shopping much easier and faster for its users.
