The hip hop/rap Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” based on the life of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, is taking the nation by storm.

The hit musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda who also stars as the titular role, wrote the musical over the course of six years. While on vacation during the days of “In the Heights,” the first Broadway musical he wrote and starred in, Miranda picked up an 800 page biography of Alexander Hamilton, written by Ron Chernow. Before he put the biography down, Miranda knew it had to be a hip hop musical, and it took him six years to complete it.

But the catchy and rhythmic music in “Hamilton” is not the only reason why it has received a lot of praise. The musical, which has already garnered a Grammy Award, caught the attention of wide audiences throughout the country because of its diversity in casting.

“Hamilton” features many people of color in the all-star cast. Joining Miranda in the original cast are Leslie Odom Jr. as Vice President Aaron Burr, Phillipa Soo as Elizabeth Schuyler, Renee Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, and Daveed Diggs as Thomas Jefferson.

It started previews off-Broadway in Jan. 2015 before moving to its current home at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City in July 2015. Acquiring tickets for the show is a bit difficult, though. “Hamilton,” which is sold out in New York City until Feb. 2017, will come to the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood in August 2017 after playing in Chicago and San Francisco.

A season package at the Pantages went on sale in late Feb. and featured six other show tickets in addition to a ticket for “Hamilton.” Ticket prices for the 2016-17 season started at $236, individual ticket prices will be announced later this year, and will undoubtedly sell out before it starts its run in Los Angeles.

“Hamilton” runs for two hours and 45 minutes. The soundtrack with the original cast recordings is available for download on iTunes and Spotify.
