Oscars predictions 2016

Saba Mahmoudi

With the Oscars right around the corner, competition is heating up with this year’s awards season.

On Feb. 28 the 88th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Actor Chris Rock will be hosting the event that will be televised on ABC. Here are my predictions for the award night.

BEST PICTURE

The Big Short

Bridge of Spies

Brooklyn

Mad Max: Fury Road

The Martian

The Revenant

Room

Spotlight

Nominated in eleven categories, “Revenant” will most likely win for the best picture.

BEST ACTOR

Bryan Cranston, Trumbo

Matt Damon, The Martian

Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant

Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs

Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

The competition is high in this category between last year’s Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne and Leonardo Dicaprio. However, it seems like this is the year that Dicaprio could finally win that Oscar. Dicaprio also won this year’s Golden Globe for his amazing performance in “The Revenant.”

BEST ACTRESS

Cate Blanchett, Carol

Brie Larson, Room

Jennifer Lawrence, Joy

Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years

Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn

Jennifer Lawrence may have won the Golden Globe for the same category but Brie Larson has a high chance of winning the Oscar for her incredible performance in “Room.”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Christian Bale, The Big Short

Tom Hardy, The Revenant

Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight

Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies

Sylvester Stallone, Creed

This is a tight competition since all of the nominees’ performances were memorable. However, Tom Hardy will probably win but Sylvester Stallone and Mark Rylance are closely behind.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight

Rooney Mara, Carol

Rachel McAdams, Spotlight

Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl

Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

This is one of the most anticipated categories since all the performances were incredible. Alicia Vikander did amazing in “The Danish Girl” and for this, will most likely win the Oscar.

DIRECTING

Adam McKay – The Big Short

George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road

Alejandro G. Iñárritu – The Revenant

Lenny Abrahamson – Room

Tom McCarthy – Spotlight

Both “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “The Revenant” are nominated in multiple well deserved categories. However, it looks like last year’s winner, Alejandro G. Iñárritu who directed “Revenant,” will fall behind George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

Anomalisa

Boy and the World

Inside Out

Shaun the Sheep Movie

When Marnie Was There

Inside Out” was one of the best animated movies that came out this year and has a high chance of outshining the other nominees in this category.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

Amy

Cartel Land

The Look of Silence

What Happened, Miss Simone?

Winter on Fire

The high rating and reviews are loud for “The Look of Silence” and for this will most likely earn the award.

ORIGINAL SONG

“Earned It” – Fifty Shades of Grey

“Manta Ray” – Racing Extinction

“Simple Song #3” – Youth

“Til It Happens to You” – The Hunting Ground

“Writing’s on the Wall” – Spectre

Songs are important part of the movies and  Diane Warren and Lady Gaga will likely be the ones to take the award home for “Til It Happens to You.”
