To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar
“Overwhelmingly Black” for some,
“The Great American Hip-Hop Album” for others, K. Dot ditched everything that he was linked to. Backed up by a live band, we are presented with a new version of Lamar, both lyrically and sonically. This album was Lamar’s answer for every listener’s itching question from his last album: “Can it get any better?” Yes, it can, and it did.

I Love You, Honeybear by Father John Misty
Although he released the album as Father John Misty, Joshua Tillman described the album as a concept about himself. Songs like “Bored in the USA” and “Chateau Lobby #4” are standouts. “True Affection” talks about how addicted people have become to their devices and doesn’t come off cringe-worthy, which was actually impossible before and will probably be after.

Carrie & Lowell by Sufjan Stevens
Stevens opted out of 
putting an emphasis on the American forests for his latest album. Carrie & Lowell is his most personal album, dedicated to his mother who passed away a couple years ago. It’s rare to hear an album where the artist is purely stripped to the bone. The album’s pure rawness can be heard in songs like “John My Beloved.”

n as the birthplace of Elvis Presley. But something special happened in the years of 1993 & 1995, Aaquil “Slim Jimmy” Brown & Khalif “Swae Lee” Brown were born, about a decade, they formed Rae Sremmurd. They’ve lived the true American Dream, from rags to riches, but in both stages of the Capitalist Class structure, they partied harder than Elvis ever would. Needless to say, Tupelo has a new national treasure.

Slime Season by Young Thug
Hours before Slime Seas
on dropped, Young Thug went on Twitter to ask fans to make an album cover. Ideally, he said it because he wants his fans to give graphic designers a shot at a thicker portfolio. But if everyone agrees to be reasonable, we can come to the conclusion that he probably did it because he simply doesn’t care. He goes in the studio, records a massive number of tracks and wants to release it without having album art, so he lets his fans fill the blank.

The Powers That B – Death Grips–
Waiting for this album was a
n emotional roller coaster, but roller coasters are made for entertainment. So it was more like being told you’re about to get cake but then get molten hot lava poured on your face, nothing made sense and the pain was unbearable. But Death Grips finally released their final album on March 31st and needless to say, the wait was worth it.
