Despite the 87% increase in ticket sales, as reported by E! News, most students would say that ‘Twilight’ has lost its spark.
“I think the hue for ‘Twilight’ has died down by huge amounts since it was first popular,” said sophomore Boa Pistol-Boesch at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School (DPMHS).
This decrease in popularity is due to two ginormous blows, ‘Hunger Games’ and the Kristen Stewart affair.
As everyone awaited the release of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” the final movie of the five-part series, they were side tracked by a new teen favorite the swept the nation, “Hunger Games.”
“Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, was based off of a book series similar to the “Twilight Saga.” The movie is surrounded by a female, Katniss Everdeen, who goes through trials and tribulations as she continues in her life’s journey, just like Bella Swan of the “Twilight Saga.”
This movie gave the fans of “Hunger Games” something new and highly adventurous that had them up on their toes every second. It also gained a different audience than “Twilight.”
The audience of the “Hunger Games” gathers more male followers because of its action packed scenes, but also keeps the hopeless romantic females straddling along with the sadness of death and the love between Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, a former schoolmate of Everdeen.
Another blow to “Twilight’s” ego was Stewart’s heartbreaking cheating scandal and subsequent breakup with her co-star Robert Pattinson. Some students have said that there is no way her personal situation will affect the movie.
“Kristen Stewart may have her drama but her character Bella is still the same,” Pistol-Boesch said.
Others students are on the other side of the fence with the situation. They are saying that the scandal probably cause a lot of awkwardness and tension between the two and that it is going to be a difficult to look at her the same way.
“It’s going to be really different looking at her knowing what she did,” said DPMHS sophomore Valerie Randin.
Despite the difficult trials “Twilight” has gone through, it still has it’s twi-hard fans that will stick with them through thick and thin.
“Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” will be released in theaters everywhere on Nov. 16, but some of the twi-hards probably already know that there will be a special event held to refresh everyone’s mind and get them ready for the new movie.
Fans will have the chance to spend around eight hour catching up with Bella, Edward and Jacob and the gang through a “Twilight” movie marathon on Nov. 15 and it will be at the low price of $35.
The marathon, that will be held nationwide, will encompass the four films in the franchise in order: “Twilight,” “New Moon,” “Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.”
People who attend will also be treated to never before seen content and a souvenir lanyard and the whole marathon will end with a 10 p.m. premiere of the “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” finale.
Hopefully the opinions of students will change as the release date of “Breaking Dawn — Part 2” approaches but as for now Edward Cullen shall be without his twinkle.
