In “The Maze Runner,” the audience are able to witness Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his risk-taking friends, Gladers, make their way out of the maze and into WCKD’s headquarters after some had been trapped for a few years.

In the second installation of the series, we get to learn more about WCKD, the organization that placed Thomas and his friends in the land around the maze.

The movie will pick up with how they are dealing with the disease spreading in their world, the Flare, as they travel through the world they once called home, the Scorch.

The sequel marks the return of Thomas and the rest of the Gladers: Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), and Minho (Ki Hong Lee) from the first film adaptation.

In addition, some of the new cast members include Jorge (Giancalo Espostio), Vince (Barry Pepper) and Brenda (Rosa Salazar). The movie was directed by Wes Ball, who also directed the first film.

The dystopian book series consists of four books written by James Dashner. The series has a large following, in which high anticipation from fans could result in large success for the film. The movie’s production company saw this with the release of the first installation last fall when it made $344 million at the box office against a $34 million budget.

This film franchise would be lucky if it did see a large peak at the box office compared to the first film. Other movies, like “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” were, unfortunately, unable to have such a high peak. They had an $85 million budget with $288 million at the box office for the first movie, but were only able to rake in $295 million at the box office against a $110 million budget for the second installation of the series.

MPAA rating is PG-13 for extended sequences of violence and action, some thematic elements, substance use and language.

Running time: 2 hours, 11 minutes
